Cyclist survives horrific crash in velodrome race

A dramatic video has emerged from the South American Games in Santiago, Chile in March, showing the moment a cyclist experienced a horrific crash in the velodrome.

Chilean, Irene Aravena was competing with her teammate against Brazil in the bronze medal women’s team sprint race when she smashed into a starting gate and was thrown over her handlebars.

She was apparently unable to stop after officials waved a red flag to warn about a false start, rather than removing the gate from the track.

Irene’s bicycle was split in half and, according to Belgian sports website Sport.be, she broke her thigh and kneecap in the crash.

With Chile forced to withdraw from the race, the bronze medal went to Brazil.
