Water spout at Selsey, Chichester

Buy video

An amazing video has emerged of a water spout off the coast of Selsey, Chichester on Sunday.

Selsey resident Martin Thomas captured the footage on his phone while he was out walking his dog.

A waterspout is a rotating column of water and spray formed by a whirlwind occurring over the sea or other body of water

Whilst walking my dog down at the sea front in Selsey the 29th June at about 18.30 hrs. the sky looking south became very threatening and assumed we were going to get wet .the Nimbus stratus clouds were billowing up forming a massive block in front of me .this was turning into something more than just a rain cloud. Underneath this Blanket of cloud were three individual clouds shaped like fish, but from out of one of these clouds appeared a funnel shape cloud which lowered its "Trunk" and started to extracting the water out of the sea.......Then as I continued to observe this strange phenomenon the water flume was spinning around just like a twister ,but being sea located it was just syphoning the water up into the cloud and then the funnel then retracted back vertically into the cloud .A few more funnels appeared then disappeared . After a while I picked up my pro video camera and My Nikon from home hoping to see the results of this happening such as a lightening strike or heavy thunder but it must have exhausted itself further out to sea. This is why its called a Water Spout.
