A dramatic video has emerged capturing the moment a fire extinguisher halted a land speed test on the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA earlier this month.

Driver Danny Thompson was forced to bring his 390 mile per hour speed run to an abrupt halt after the fire extinguisher installed in his Challenger II land-racer filled the cockpit with fire retardant foam.

The video, captured from Danny’s cockpit, shows the moment foam quickly fills the vehicle, obscuring his view as it runs down the windscreen.

Danny was unable to see anything through the windscreen, and had to turn off of the course blind before popping the canopy.

Fortunately Danny managed to escape from the car without any injuries and when asked later how he felt about the run, he replied “sticky, but pleased”.

According to the filmer, Danny fixed the problem and ran again the next morning, achieving a speed of 419 miles per hour.
