A dramatic video has emerged of a police officer rescuing a woman from her car after she became trapped by floodwater in Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

In the footage, captured by a local resident on Sunday, the police officer can be seen carefully approaching the car, dodging waste receptacles which are being pulled down the street by fast-flowing torrents of water.

Torrential rainfall has led to flooding on the Canary Islands since Saturday.

According to local media, in a separate incident, a 56-year-old woman died after she found herself trapped underneath a parked car during the flash flooding.
