A heartwarming video has emerged of two armadillos being rescued by tourists in Argentina.

The travellers were enjoying a picnic near Esquel in the northwest of the province of Chubut, when they discovered the unfortunate pair stuck in the pit of an abandoned petrol station.

The small mammals were struggling to climb the stairs and, according to their rescuers, appeared to have been trapped in the pit for some time.

On being released, the happy armadillos can be seen running free before returning to the safety of their leafy burrow.
