A video has emerged of a car which was stranded on a Somerset beach after a motorist became stuck while driving across mudflats on the weekend.

The 22 year-old man from Bristol escaped unhurt, but the vehicle could not be retrieved before it was submerged and sank into the mud on Berrow beach.

The Toyota Celica first got stuck on Saturday evening when the driver attempted to drive through the mud. He unsuccessfully tried to push it free.

Burnham's BARB Search and Rescue was called to the scene on Sunday morning, but its crew was unable to safely remove the car.

A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council, which manages Berrow Beach, said it is now in discussions with the owner to arrange for it to be removed.
