A cool timelapse has emerged of a rare weather phenomenon, which caused the Grand Canyon to fill up with fog on Thursday.

Visitors to the Grand Canyon national park found the iconic view clouded by a blanket of white fluffy cloud.

According to the Associated Press, the weather pattern is called a “total cloud inversion” and occurs when clouds are forced down by warm air and cannot rise

“I captured this from the South Rim outside of the El Tovar Hotel at a point in the canyon where the cloud "waves" kept lapping up and over the edge like ocean waves” the photographer later wrote online.

“At times - when the video is white - a giant cloud wave would sweep up and over us and go over the hotel and towards the train station before dissipating or being pulled back in.”
