Herd of elephants chase pride of lions

A dramatic video has emerged of a herd of elephants chasing off a pride of lions in a safari park in Zambia.

The video, captured by Rose Hipwood of The Luxury Safari Company, shows the moment a group of adult elephants, accompanied by a calf, charged towards the pride in a fierce territorial battle.

The defensive display began after a mother elephant spotted a lioness concealed among nearby bushes.

Recognising the threat, the herd gave chase to the lions, driving them away from the area.

The incident was captured in the The Lower Zambezi National Park in October but has only recently emerged online.

"The herd would have been extra sensitive to any predators, because of the presence of the young calf” Hipwood later wrote online.

“[They] were agitated as they approached from a long way off to investigate the lions scent that was blowing towards the herd. The Matriarch eventually spotted a camouflaged lioness close to our vehicle and the games began.”

“I repositioned the vehicle so we weren't part of the fleeing lion pride and watched as the whole elephant herd made sure who the real king of the jungle is! Lions are quicker than elephants thank goodness and none of them were hurt. Eventually the elephant herd calmed down and moved off to feed.”
