Colima volcano eruptions over Mexico

Buy video

Dramatic footage has emerged of the Colima volcano in Mexico erupting during a 'phase of heightened activity'.

The video uses a combination of timelapse and normal footage shot from ground level and by the filmer from an official monitoring flight. The videos were shot between the 4th and 9th February.

The filmer later wrote online: "Colima volcano is currently in a phase of heightened activity which may be a prelude to one of the major eruptions that have happened at about 100 year intervals in historical times.

"The volcano poses a major threat to the around 400000 people living in surrounding communities as the volcanic edifice has repeatedly collapsed and obliterated all life over huge areas in prehistoric times and is likely to do so again in the future. Hence the volcano is considered one of the 10 most important in the world.

"The footage combines timelapse animations of nighttime eruptions with unprecedented framerates for Colima, several still images, and video sequences including rare video from an official monitoring flight.
