Skiers in the Swiss Alps were subject to an eerie yellow backdrop after a Sahara sandstorm made its way over parts of Europe on February 6.

Footage captured by André Steiner while skiing atop the Bettmerhorn nearly 2,872 metres above sea level shows the eerie yellowish sky juxtaposed with the white snow.

Steiner said: "A huge amount of Sahara sand came over the Swiss Alps and other parts of Europe.

"The whole day a yellow sky and clouds created an apocalyptic mood while skiing on the longest glacier of Europe.

"For about 15 minutes on the to of Bettmerhorn, 2,872 meters over sea level, we were caught in the middle of the sand dust, a thin layer of sand covered the snow and glaciers and coloured everything yellow and orange.

"The video shows me André; my friends Benji and Simon, as we ski through the dust at 11 am.

"This can happen about once a year, but it has never been on this heavy before."
