Buy video

In this rare footage filmed inside a Migrant Shelter Camp in the Puntarenas province of Costa Rica, a U.S. researcher interviews a group of Iraqi immigrants, who fled the violence in their home country, migrated to America, and are trying to reach the United States. The immigrants state a series of hardships from getting out from Iraq, reaching the African continent and getting on a boat to Brazil, to cross the South American country into Colombia, then crossing the Darien Gap, into Panama, and how they were caught there, boarded on buses and taken to this camp in Costa Rica. The “Controlled Flow” policy allows Panama and Costa Rica to take care of immigrants crossing their territory, taken them to camps and shelters, for processing, before dumping them into the next country of passage. Hailing from countries like Iraq, Syria, India, Congo, Haiti and others, this large group of immigrants, that are trying to reach the United States, but who where caught crossing the Darien Gap, are ferried by the Panamanian and Costa-Rican governments under the policy “Controlled Flow”, which allows both countries to control the immigration flow passing through their territories, replacing the smugglers, who benefit from the international networks of Human trafficking and smuggling that allows them to operate, and earn lots of money. During Donald Trump's presidency, the fear of would-be terrorists infiltrating the groups and caravans of immigrants, and that could arrive to U.S. Territory, and perpetrate terrorists attacks, established that this controlled flow by Costa Rica and Panama, could be a risk to national security. This rare video, filmed undercover during assignment, was released for distribution by the institution after some time had passed.
