A heartwarming video has emerged of a puppy being reunited with its mother after it fell down a storm drain in South Africa.

The footage, captured in Durban earlier this month, shows the dramatic rescue of the puppy, which had been trapped down a flooded storm water drain for 26 hours.

After digging down through to the pipe, the team decided to break it open in various places in an attempt to locate the dog.

Luckily, one of the incisions exposed a section right in front of the soaking puppy, which was struggling to keep its mouth clear of the rising floodwater.

After pulling the puppy out of the drain, it was given a quick wash and handed over to its anxious mother.

Describing the rescue operation online, the filmer wrote "A frantic call was received to assist in the rescue of a puppy that was stuck in a storm water drain pipe. The puppy had been stuck there for 26 hours already the local SPCA and owners of the property had been digging to try reach the dog for nearly 8 hours.

At approximately 7pm a storm broke out, and it was then that the SPCA realised that immediate rapid assistance in terms of a qualified rescue crew were required to save this dog before the pipes flooded and the dog drowned.

Rescue crewmembers arrived on scene, and assessed the situation, before commencing digging and exposing sections of the pipe.

Whilst waiting for the arrival of the snake camera it was decided to break open the pipes in various places and attempt to access the dog from there.

One lucky strike and we opened the pipe up right in front of a soaking 3 week old female puppy that was battling to keep her mouth above the rising water in the pipe.

The puppy was quickly taken to a basing where she was washed to try get the smell of the water off her and get the mud off the dog where after she was dried and warmed up a little before being handed back to her mother.

By the time we had packed up, the mother was feeding and cleaning the little one."
