Bizarre footage has emerged from New York City, New York, US of a clown dancing on a metro train through the city.

The video, captured late last week on the N Train, shows the clown dancing around to an out of season version of 'jingle bells' before telling passengers that he didn't want cash - just to make them smile.

The filmer later wrote online: "An NYC subway car became a clown car in as a clown danced around to a Alvin & The Chipmunks version of Jingle Bells... in March.

"For anyone afraid of clowns, this would have been a real-life fever dream.

"The guy went totally serious at the end of the performance and let the train know that he wasn't looking for money, he just wanted to make people smile and stop taking life so seriously.

"Mission accomplished on the smiles, as the video shows."
