Bizarre footage has emerged of a herd of ponies taking part in the 90th annual Pony Swim in Chincoteague, Virginia on Wednesday.

The video, captured by a spectator, shows the herd embarking on their swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island on Virginia's eastern shore.

According to local reports, the ponies are descendants of ancestors that came to Assateague Island more than 300 years ago. Every July a volunteer group, known as 'The Saltwater Cowboys' escort the ponies to Chincoteague Island for a charity auction.

The swim began at 8.15am (local time) and lasted for about 9 minutes.
