Dramatic footage has emerged of the moment local shopkeepers intervened in an alleged smash and grab raid on a London jewellery store.

The video, captured by a bystander on Monday afternoon in Kingsbury, shows locals chasing the suspects down the road with weapons that appear to include a meat cleaver.

A number of mopeds can be seen trying to get away at speed but locals, with the help of wooden pallets and other objects, chase them down and manage to detain one in a melee.

Police can then be seen arriving as locals signal them towards the suspect they've pinned down - with officers arresting him in the middle of the crowd.

The Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at approximately 14:12hrs on Monday, 7 September to reports of a robbery in progress at a jewellers store in Kingsbury Road, Brent.

"Around six men are believed to have arrived at the store on motorcycles armed with heavy objects.

"The suspects smashed the windows at the venue and removed items from the display. The suspects left the scene on motorcycles.

"A man was arrested nearby on suspicion of armed robbery. He has been taken to a north London police station. Enquiries continue."

The filmer wrote online: "locals are quick to react to chase their motorbikes and pull them off."
