A dramatic video has emerged of an out-of-control paraglider spinning rapidly in the air before violently hitting the sea.

The footage, shot earlier this month in Ölüdeniz, Turkey, captured the moment the pilot crashed into the water because he didn't evaluate his altitude well enough.

He explained online that he was trying to avoid a storm and did a SAT manoeuvre to reduce his altitude.

However the surface of the sea appears further than it seems due to an optical illusion which explains why he hit the water at a "very high speed".

The pilot suffered a leg fracture but is now recovering.

Here is what he says about it: I have started from the lowest takeoff of Babadag mountain in Oludeniz, Turkey in May 5, 2016.

But during my fly the storm is quickly coming from Phetia side.
So I tried to run from this storm - as soon as I reach the sea line I started to do the acrobatic maneuver named SAT to reduce altitude.

I have controlled the altitude visually looking to the sea. But this was an optical illusion - when you see to the water surface you cannot define the correct distance to the sea-surface.

So I believed that I have enough altitude when I have started to release from SAT. But unfortunately - this was too late already.
So I have met the sea surface in spiral with very high speed.
