Hundreds of armoured men marched in a torchlit procession through a Shetland town on Tuesday night to celebrate the annual Up Helly Aa Viking festival.

Viking enthusiasts from around the world converged on Lerwick, Shetland, to join in the annual celebration of norse heritage.

The event continued late into the night and culminated in the dramatic burning of a replica Viking ship.

The festival dates back to the 1880s and takes place on the last tuesday of January each year.
