A cool video has emerged of serious wintery conditions on Lake Superior in Duluth, MN, USA on Tuesday.

The footage shows "erupting icy waves" crashing onto snow dunes which formed on the lake shore after strong winds and heavy snowfall hit the area.

"Strong winds and waves stacked the most colossal ice dunes we have witnessed in Duluth, Minnesota," the filmers Dawn LaPointe
and Gary Fiedler wrote online.

"The incoming icy waves caused frequent, impressive eruptions of ice chunks."

"It was incredible to witness the amazing power of our Great Lake from our front row seats in Duluth!" they added.

According to them, the snow dunes were between 15 and 20 feet tall while the icy waves erupted up to 20 feet above them.

Lake Superior was in an wild wintry, mood on February 7, 2017. Strong winds and waves stacked the most colossal ice dunes we have witnessed in Duluth, Minnesota. The incoming icy waves caused frequent, impressive eruptions of ice chunks which landed on shore to form the ice dunes. Each volcano-like eruption grew the ice dunes and volcano-like formations even taller. The ice dunes were 15-20' tall and many of the eruptions launched an estimated 20' or more above that. During the first minute, you can see the North Pier Lighthouse in the distance, dwarfed by the ice dunes in the foreground. While Hawaii has lava flowing into the ocean, Lake Superior has some impressive ice dunes and ice volcano action! It was incredible to witness the amazing power of our Great Lake from our front row seats in Duluth!

The erupting icy waves are brownish from the rivers that flow into Lake Superior and from the lake being stirred up. Just miles up the shore, the waves are green, but lack ice dunes or volcano-like formations. All video is shown at actual speed, except for the third segment which plays at half speed to better show the twist of the eruption and the many ice chunks. Those Great Lake waves had some amazing power -- they were launching chunks of ice that were at least 4" thick and the diameter of a basketball, and some even greater. It was a day that one shouldn't turn one's back on the lake or venture near the edge! (This winter storm was named "Maya" by The Weather Channel.)
