Fans of Greek basketball team Aris Thessaloniki clashed with police on Saturday at an indoor arena after their team lost the Greek Cup Basketball Final in Thessaloniki.

Fans tore out seats and threw them at police who responded with volleys of tear gas and stun grenades.

Aris’ fans clashed with police in the legendary indoor arena of Alexandreio Melathron (Nick Galis Hall) after the Greek Cup Basketball Final held in Thessaloniki, Greece on February 18th. During this violent episode, knots of fans ripped-up and threw seats at officers wearing riot gear, who responded with volleys of tear gas and stun grenades. Panathinaikos’ players celebrated the win(68-59) over Aris under their fans block despite the smell of tear gas aggravated the atmosphere. Some of the winning players were filming the violence using their smartphones’ cameras! The basketball evening started out bad. The match’s tip-off was delayed by 65 minutes as police failed to control the inflowing Aris’ supporters who stormed the VIP seats, meanwhile Panathinakos’ fans hurled flares to Aris’ fans block. Police said that seven people were arrested. Panathinaikos won the Greek Cup for sixth time in a row and 18th in club’s history. Green’s guard James Feldeine was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final after scoring a team-high 18 points.
