Catching beachworms at Australian beach on ANZAC day

Buy video

Fascinating footage of catching beachworms at Terrigal Beach on the New South Wales Central Coast, Australia.

One of my favourite and most relaxing past times is catching beachworms with my children and their friends.

At low tide, smelly dead fish in a sock are waved over the sandbank. The beachworms, which can be over one metre long, lie in wait in the sand for food to be washed past their mouths for a feed.
When they smell the dead fish they poke their heads above the sand in order to catch their next meal.
Using a fish head to tease them out, they can then be grabbed with a special pair of pliers and then carefully pulled out of the sand.
They make excellent bait at high tide for whiting, bream and flathead.

The helicopter which flew by was a Sea King helicopter and it was taking part in Australia's ANZAC war memorial day.
