A video has emerged from south London of a gang brazenly using a cordless angle grinder and a hammer to try to steal a motor scooter.

The astonishing clip was captured by the owner of the scooter they were attempting to steal in Battersea on April 28.

In the video two members of the gang go to work on the locks while two others wait on their own scooters with the engines running, presumably for a quick getaway.

The would-be thieves seem completely unfazed by the amount of noise they make or by the shower of sparks which fly from the locks they attempt to cut.

According to the filmer, six of his neighbours were awoken in the incident and even with them looking on, the thieves kept trying to steal the vehicle for 20 minutes. One of them even waves at an onlooker.

When the police arrived, the thieves fled without the scooter but the police did not give chase.

Police have been banned from pursuing criminals on mopeds or motorbikes on London’s streets because of the risk to the suspect or members of the public.

Following on from the Evening Standard's article regarding the Moped Gang in the West End, please find attached footage taken of a gang trying to steal my moped in Battersea.
A gang of 4, on two mopeds. One guy hotwires the moped to start it so that its ready to drive away as soon as the locks are broken; then he attacks both D Locks with a battery powered angle grinder. Another guy attacks the grip lock with a hammer. The remaining two guys wait on running mopeds, allowing the gang a quick get away if the police arrive.
6 neighbours were woken by this event; 4 called the police. They were at it for 20 mins.
One guy is seen waving to the man taking the video (right at the beginning of the clip); they were completely unbothered by those watching. And it makes you question their moral compass. And it shows how dangerous they are if confronted.
The police arrived, quietly with their lights off. The gang scarpered. The police apparently arent allowed to chase gangs on mopeds as it is too dangerous.
The bike remained unstolen due to the grip lock which couldn't be opened (griplock.com). Unknown to the gang the moped also had a tracker on it, but thankfully this wasn't needed.
