Footage has emerged of wildlife activists rescuing a female kangaroo and her joey after they found her with her lower jaw blown off from a gunshot.

The video, shot in New South Wales, Australia on May 26, shows the extent of the kangaroo's wound which forced her to eject her joey from her pouch.

According to Australian law, a kangaroo that has been shot and wounded must be "euthanised quickly and humanely to alleviate suffering", regardless of whether it was shot for commercial or non-commercial purpose.

Kangaroos are considered a pest in Australia and according to official statistics from the Australian Department of the Environment and Energy, each year, millions of them are culled.

This video portrays animal cruelty to the worst degree of our native, and iconic kangaroo. It was made to draw awareness to what happens here in Australia with people culling via the tag system but also is a good reflection of what happens with the government culls.
