White storks nesting and preening

Buy video

A flock of white storks attracted my attention while I was traveling through Vafeika, a small village located approximately twelve kilometres away from Xanthi, Greece last Friday. I decided to film them for about an hour and I liked it, as I captured the moment when they were on nesting, feeding their youngsters and preening. Vafeika’s storks came back to their “summer houses” from the wintering in North Africa earlier than any other year, as a researcher who monitors their daily life told me. North Greece’s storks migrate to North Africa through Vosporus and Sinai Peninsula. They use the uplift of air thermals to reduce the effort of long-distance flying, as all the big sized predators are used to do. You can see/notice here the man-made nest platforms built as a conservation measure so as to prevent storks from disrupting any electricity supplies by nesting on pylons. Vafeika storks are used to spend their summertime there time as they can easily feed themselves and their youngsters in the nearby rivers and lakes.
