The government of the autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq is digging a 17 kilometer (11 miles) long trench on its border with Syria. The trench is two meters (6 feet) deep and 2.7 Meters (9 feet) wide. The regional government says the trench is designed to halt the infiltration of militants and smugglers but it is condemned by the Syrian Kurdish organization PYD which says it is an attempt to blockade Kurds in Syria.
