The Chinese city of Wuhan is trialling an unusual automatic barrier at a pedestrian crossing.

A video captured on August 28 showed the safety device in operation.

Two red belts move up and down automatically, either stopping pedestrians or letting them cross.

In the video, captured in Wuhan, Hubei Province on August 28, two red belts stretched between two iron pillars at the crossing go up and down automatically with the traffic lights.

When the traffic lights turn to green, the belts raise up to the top of pillars to allow passersby go through.

While, they can also go down to only one metre above the ground, when the signal turns to red.

There is also a digital screen displaying the slogans above the red belts to warn passersby.

The device helped reduce the human workers as well as improved the citizens' safety awareness.
