9 Slow Loris (Nycticebus sp) Saved from Hunters and Wildlife Traders

Security and Law Enforcement Center for Environment and Forestry of Sumatra region saved 9 lorises (Nycticebus Sp) from wildlife poachers and traders in Agam District, West Sumatra, 23 September 2017.

9 lorises are 5 of them adults, 2 babies, and 2 teenagers. There are 7 females and 2 males. Officers have also set two perpetrators of wild hunters and wildlife traders as suspects. They are under investigation by the district police of Agam.

The officer took the loris to the conservation agency in Solok district for treatment. This animals is still fine. Health and behavior not yet changed and still wild.

The lorises will recover and being released into its natural habitat after completion of treatment.

Slow hunted and caught wild hunters are usually used as pets and traded at high selling prices. Luckily, the 9 loris rescued has not been cut off his fangs. Cutting lemurs are done when the buyer intends to make a pet loris. Cutting canine teeth often cause mouth infections that lead to death of slow loris.

Slow loris is primate protected by Law Number 5 Year 1990 and Government Regulation Number 7 Year 1999.

In addition, the loris sometimes referred to as shy animals are also protected by international rules in Appendix I by CITES (Convention International on Trade of Endangered Species) which means it is prohibited in all forms of international trade. The nocturnal primate (active at night) is also included in the list of 25 endangered primates in the world.
