Footage of a runaway crocodile taking a walk down a supermarket escalator has emerged from China.

The CCTV video, captured in Hechi in the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on August 27, shows a huge crocodile walking down an escalator in a supermarket while a group of people attempt to catch it.

According to reports, the supermarket bought the crocodile in a bid to attract customers, locking it in an iron cage.

However, it was able to break out of the cage and escape.

In the end, several security guards captured the croc and killed it, local media reported. The reptile's meat was then put on sale in the supermarket.

However, since the supermarket did not have a licence to kill the crocodile and sell its meat, police stopped the product from going on sale.
