Riot police in Barcelona fire rubber bullets at supporters of Catalan independence.

The clashes took place on October 1 after police entered the Ramón Lull school and seized ballots and ballot boxes.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy imposed direct rule on the region after the Catalan parliament declared independence on 27 October in Spain's biggest political crisis since 1975, when military dictator General Francisco Franco died.

Elections in December 21 gave the three pro-independence parties a small majority in the regional Parliament.
