Sea polluted by 50 tons of crude palm oil at Indonesian harbour
Fifty tons of crude palm oil pollute Bayur Bay, Padang, West Sumatera, on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Palm oil owned by PT Wira Innomas spilled from liquid tank CPO first seen at around 10:00 pm.
The company's technicians and Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) Bayur officers are working to fix the leaking tank so that the amount of CPO spilled does not increase.
PT Wira Innomas acknowledged the crude oil spill was indeed coming from its factory. Based on current estimates, the crude oil spill has reached 50 tons.
Head of Public Relations at PT Wira Innomas, Gunawan said, "This oil spill is pure vegetable oil and not waste." The company is still investigating the exact cause of the leak.
The company claims to have 14 CPO storage tanks with an average capacity of 3,000 tons, while the leaking tanks are tank number 14.
Padang City Government threatened to revoke the company's license related to leakage of the pipe causing pollution of Teluk Bayur waters. Sanction of revocation of permits in accordance with Law no. 32 of 2009 on the Protection and Management of the Environment.
