Elephant blocks road for banana treat, ransacks bus for more
A bus driver’s attempt to bribe an elephant with a bunch of bananas and secure free passage failed miserably.
The greedy elephant enjoyed its treat and then attacked him asking for more.
The incident reportedly took place on the Buttala-Katharagama highway in Sri Lanka in the last week of September.
Wild elephants at the nearby Yala National Park have developed a quirky habit of waiting at the road where vehicles ply. They approach the vehicles blocking the road and demanding a treat before letting them pass.
Local drivers say they carry fruits to bribe elephants, most of which are harmless and let them pass. But a few elephants get rough with the vehicles asking for more, they say.
A video filmed by a passenger travelling in a bus owned by Matara-based Srikatha travels shows that the situation can turn dangerous quickly.
The bus slows down near the waiting elephant and the driver hands over a large bunch of bananas.
Not satisfied, the elephant puts its trunk through the window next to him shattering the glass.
As the driver scrambles to evacuate his seat hastily, it ransacks the bus seeking more loot.
It triggers a commotion in the bus and many passengers, including a small boy, can be spotted within the reach of the behemoth.
The elephant reportedly retreated after a while and the bus continued with its journey though with a broken window and shaken passengers.
