The hooded grebe - Dance like nobody's watching

Amazing footage has emerged from Argentina of the matin dance of a rare species of bird at risk of extinction: the hooded grebes.

This footage is part of a 30-minute documentary: 'Tango in the Wind' about the conservation effort to save the hooded grebe, shows the funny mating dance that resembles a tango.

"The hooded grebe is one of the rarest birds in South America. Its courtship dance is a thing of beauty. This expression of love is rarely seen, as they breed on lakes on the high plateaux of Patagonia, severed from human disturbance by hours of rocky volcanic terrain," the filmer said.

The hooded grebe is a species at risk of extinction; there are only 800 of these birds and only a few dozen people had seen this secretive courtship dance in real life.

The hooded grebe is one of the rarest birds in South America, with there being mounting risk of extinction due to climate change and the proposed development of large Chinese super dams.
