A Buddhist monk is publicly defrocked after bringing shame on the religion - with a drunken rant on a bus.

Phitakorn Suthammo, 35, had been travelling on a bus from Rayong to Pattaya in Thailand on a Sunday evening when he started yelling at fellow passengers.

He was slurring his words as he ranted about the world, tore up his own money, and swore at other people on the bus.

Passengers said he ''smelled very strongly of alcohol'' and the driver called police who were waiting for him when the bus arrived at his temple in Chonburi province, Thailand.

Footage shows the humiliating moment Phitakorn is kicked out of the religion by being defrocked by the temples Abbott - who orders him to change on the spot out of his scared orange robes into white a white civilian outfit.

He responds by angrily throwing his robes to the ground and slurring.

The abbot at the Wat Thamma Samakhee temple, Phra Wattana, said: ‘’This is no example to set for the other monks.

‘’Monks are expected to behave better than this. He had not committed a crime but his behaviour was inappropriate.

‘’He has been punished a lot by being defrocked. He will regret it when he is sober but there's no way back for him.''

The monk was not arrested but was warned about his behaviour by officers who let him go.
