Sad end to the copper mining era in Arizona

In June of 1999, BHP Billiton Ltd concluded operations at the plant and mine in San Manuel, Arizona, laying off over 2,200 people dependent on copper mining to support their families.

On January 17th, 2007 at 13:00, the last remaining vestiges of the once powerful Magma Smelter were taken down. These smoke-stacks were iconic to the community and the rich history of San Manuel's past, having once been one of the largest copper producing mines in the world.
