Insider video captures moments after boiler blast at power station
The death toll at India’s worst industrial accident in recent years has climbed to 32.
An explosion at a power station run by National Thermal Power Corporation in Raebareli also injured over 100 workers.
The toll is likely to climb further as many are battling for life.
A video shot by a worker captures the moments that followed the horrific explosion at the 500 mw unit on November 1.
It depicts a picture of devastation and chaos as the boiler goes up in flames and steam gush out. As the area is enveloped with fumes, workers can be heard shouting in fear.
NTPC officials said ash collected in an outlet building up extreme high pressure and triggering an explosion.
NTPC, India’s leading power producer, has shut down the unit, where the mishap occurred. The other five units of the station are operating normally.
NTPC officials also sought to defend their safety record in off-the-record interaction with the media. They said accidents had been a rarity at their power stations.
But many workers of the affected NTPC plant went on a protest against the management on Thursday.
They said the temperature has been steadily rising at the furnace, but the management had ignored their warning.
The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a compensation of Rs.2 lakh for the families of the dead and Rs. 50,000 for the badly injured.
