Indian city evicting 6,000 beggars ahead of Ivanka Trump’s visit
Police launched a massive drive on November 8 to evict beggars from Hyderabad, India, to prepare for Ivanka Trump’s visit.
The poor individuals are being shifted to a rehabilitation centre set up inside Hyderabad central prison in Chanchalguda.
The US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka will be arriving to inaugurate Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) from November 28-30.
Officials said she is expected to do some sightseeing as well.
Hyderabad police commissioner Mahendar Reddy issued an order on November 7 prohibiting begging in the city from November 8 to January 7, 2018.
“These (begging) acts are dangerous to the safety of the vehicular traffic and public in general,” read the order.
But a few officials said the ban had been slapped to avoid inconvenience to foreign delegates. As a tech hub, the city had to guard its image, they added.
The police started rounding up beggars in different parts of the city on November 8 and shifted them to the rehab centre.
Local news outlets reported that 400 beggars were taken away from Goshamahal area.
A senior police officer Narender Reddy told a group of homeless beggars: “You will be given food, clothes and medicine. It is not healthy to live outside during winter as it causes respiratory problems.”
Reports estimate that as many as 6,000 beggars in the city would be evacuated.
A Hyderabad-based journalist, Mohammed Abdul Akram, said: “There is widespread concern that human rights of the poor are being violated.”
After the GES event, Hyderabad would host another high-profile gathering, World Telugu Conference, in December
