A three-year-old girl was pulled to safety in a bucket from a 20-foot well in an Indian village on Thursday.

Naniya had accompanied her mother, Bai Paraste, who had gone to the village well to wash her clothes.

The little girl, who was playing near the well, slipped and fell into it.

Bai, who saw her falling in, raised the alarm.

Hearing her screams, two men, Surendra Sonwani and Rahul Uikey, who were in the vicinity jumped into the well.

As they got hold of the drowning girl and held her above water, other villagers gathered at the well to help them.

A bucket was lowered and Naniya was hauled up safely to the relief of her distraught mother.

Surendra and Rahul were pulled up with the help of ropes later. Naniya’s mother and grandmother, who had rushed to the spot, were seen touching the feet of Rahul, who was much younger to them.

In India, the gesture is a show of immense gratitude and is usually displayed before god or elders, who are held in high regard.

The incident occurred at Devalpur village in Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh.
