Scenes of chaos at the airport in Bali this morning after a volcano eruption caused flights to be cancelled.

Mount Agung began erupting for the second time on Saturday afternoon - sending clouds of volcanic ash soaring 1,500 metres into the air at 5.30pm local time.

Safety warnings were today raised to their highest levels prompting the closure of the Ngurah Rai International Airport, the popular tourist island’s only airport.

More than 400 flights were disrupted after the Indonesian volcano belched columns of ash into the sky. A further 50,000 tourists were stranded.

Video taken from the airport this morning at around 10.30am shows the chaos as thousands of passengers with suitcases faced long delays as the uncertainly around the eruption continues.

The filmer, Putu Astrawan, 36, said: ‘’All the flights were cancelled. This was the current situation this morning due to the eruption of the volcano.

‘’We could only pray that everyone stayed safe and that tourists were not caused too many problems.''

Passengers were sent back to their hotels and resorts. Just a few hours later the normally busy airport was deserted.
