Cessna 150 vs CYOS Crosswinds

Buy video

This was a video of a pilot working hard to land a small airplane at the Owen Sound Airport. The airport is notorious for strong crosswinds, where the wind is at a large angle the direction of landing. This makes it difficult to control the aircraft horizontally and requires the pilot to employ a special technique called Side Slipping. This technique works well in general, however when the winds are also gusting, where the speed is changing, it creates additional lift, and then when the gusts die down, a sudden decrease in lift is experienced, requiring the pilot to make multiple control inputs throughout the landing flare. The pilot made a good decision to "go around" on the first attempt and try again. The winds can be quite different from one approach to the next, so as long as there is ample fuel, it's best to try again. This airplane is one that I have flown personally, as I trained a pilot who owned it previously. We teach many pilots to fly every year at this airport and make some of the best crosswind pilots in the country...if you can land in a strong Owen Sound crosswind, you can land just about anywhere!
