Actor John Cleese battled sound problems last night (December 7) when turning on the Christmas lights at Shepherd Market in London's Mayfair.

The "Monty Python" star was barely audible due to PA problems when he made a speech before turning on the Christmas lights.

"We can't hear you, John!" says a woman in the audience.

"Turn him up!" says a man.

Cleese, known for his grumpy characters, also made a joke about "stupid engagements like this" while talking in virtual darkness.

A croaky-sounding Cleese also talks about looking forward to going to a nearby club after he has "turned these f******g lights on."

After a countdown, the lights are turned on before Cleese opens a bottle of bubbly with a sword.
