The day after Christmas the weather was very cold in Northern Indiana and It had dropped down to below 0 degrees Fahrenheit with wind chills from 10 below to 15 below zero. This kind of dangerous winter weather can cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. You could feel the bitter cold winter weather hit the skin on your face as soon as you walk outdoors. Although it does not happen very often, when it does get this cold you will see Ice floes form along the Tippecanoe river and float downstream.

It was the day after Christmas and I was still at my in-laws home in Winamac, Indiana since we had stayed overnight. I looked out the back window and saw the frozen country winter landscape complete with large sheets of ice floating along the river. When I took this video in the morning it was eerily silent with the exception of the crow cawing as he flew over head and the strange sounds of the ice floes breaking as they hit the banks of the river and the branches of fallen trees.

I wanted to get closer to the river to capture the sounds better but it was too risky. The river can be deadly with this type of weather. It is too easy to slip and fall in and I would not survive long in that freezing water. In fact just 100 yards up the bank a neighbor's child had fallen in some years back during weather just like this when the river was iced up and sadly they were never able to recover him from the water.
