New Year's Day Supermoon rising over Lake Superior and icy ships; timelapse video

Buy video

Lake Superior was serene as the sun set and supermoon rose through haze and over three ships at anchor on New Year's Day. The John G. Munson, Algoma Equinox, and Edwin H. Gott (among others), have been waiting to load iron ore in Two Harbors and Duluth, Minnesota. The extreme cold snap in the region has caused delays as the shipping season soon comes to a close, causing as many as 10 large shipping vessels to be anchored at the western tip of Lake Superior. The video shows the subtle movements of the ships at anchor while the moonbeam illuminates shifting ice on the Great Lake. It was about 0°F at the time of recording, which is a brief warm-up in an otherwise long stretch of brutal winter weather.
