Catching Stone Crabs in Key West, Florida

Buy video

It is Stone Crab season in Florida. The season for this highly sought after delicacy is from October 15 until May 15. Unlike other crabs when you catch a stone crab you release them back into the water so they can be caught again. With Stone Crabs the claws are what you seek as opposed to the entire crab. You simply take the largest of the two claws and then put the crab back into the water. Their claws grow back!

This method helps with conservation efforts and ensures sustainability. Still, these claws fetch a hefty price with medium claws costing around $28 per pound while colossal sized claws are priced at well over $55 per pound.

This video is of us pulling up our crab trap off of our sea wall in Key West. We use pigs feet and chicken backs as bait and let the trap sit in the water for a couple of days to lure them in. As you can see the meal is an attractive one for the Stone Crabs since we caught nearly a dozen in the single trap.
