Passengers and crew on board the P&O Ventura out of Southampton has some hairy moments recently when the cruise ship was battered by 100-knot winds.

A video filmed in the main dining room on December 10 shows staff clinging to the fixtures as the ship lists badly. The sound of all the tableware smashing can be heard.

A group of passengers from the UK hold on tightly to their wine glasses, trying their best to enjoy the meal under testing circumstances.

"Seated passengers' chairs toppled over spilling elderly passengers on to the floor," the filmer later wrote online.

"The listing was such, and becoming slowly worse, that I began to fear the ship may actually go over," he added.

"Only after about 25-30 minutes did the Bridge finally speak up and advise we had been hit by a side on '100-knot wind squall' and they had been turning the ship into the wind."

During the evening of 10 Dec on-board the P&O Ventura out of Southampton approx. 9.30pm the ship began to list during a storm. That was not unusual at the time as seas were 6-7 metres and the ship was rolling significantly (the outside decks were closed to passengers).

The listing to the port side continued and became gradually worse. After ~10mins of listing to port it became apparent something was amiss and it was not 'normal operations'.

Over another 10-15mins the listing became worse. I was in the main dinning room and it was enough for all tableware to be thrown on the floor, and up against the left hand wall. Passenger could not stand up and crew were seen to be hanging on to fixtures as standing and walking was impossible due to the angle the shop was now at. Seated passengers' chairs toppled over spilling passengers (elderly) on to the floor. The listing was such, and becoming slowly worse, that I began to fear the ship may actually go over.

Only after ~25-30min (it seemed) did the Bridge finally speak up and advise we had been hit by a side on "100knot wind squall" and they had been turning the ship into the wind. The captain stated the ship was never in any danger, but i would expect him to say that regardless (a video of his announcement I noticed can be found on YouTube). The ship began to right itself.

Upon returning to my cabin I noticed my carpet was wet. I wasnt sure from where the water had come. The next day the cabin attendant advised it was the sea being forced through the closed balcony door. My cabin is on Deck 11 on the port side. Therefore, due to the listing the sea waves reached deck 11 balconies with enough force to make their way through a sealed balcony door!
