Compass jellyfish off Portland

Buy video

On Saturday June 21st 2014 a large shoal of jellyfish was seen close inshore off the west coast of Portland Bill, Dorset. The shoal comprised dozens of individuals of three species of jellyfish, including several unusually large barrel jellyfish. This film shows an example of the beautifully marked compass jellyfish, a species with much longer tentacles than the barrel jellyfish but with a much smaller body. Towards the end of the film a small fish can be seen swimming in and out of the jellyfish's stinging tentacles.
