A kind-hearted villager last week risked his life to rescue a nine-year-old boy trapped in a frozen river in China.

Jiao Qingguo crawled shirtless across the thin ice to reach the boy but then also fell through the ice into the water.

From the water Jiao managed to help the boy swim closer to bank where other villagers used ropes and a ladder to haul the nine-year-old to safety.

The boy escaped without serious injuries.

Jiao received a reward of more than 550 pounds.
