A team of spectators joined hands to bring an elephant under control after it ran amok during a temple festival in Kollam in South Indian state of Kerala on January 19.
The 21-year-old male elephant, Gouri Nandan, which was taking part in a ceremonial procession, went berserk ploughing into the crowd and injuring several onlookers.
In a heart-stopping moment, a man who was trying to restrain the elephant, slipped and fell down in the path of the rampaging behemoth.
He luckily escaped from being trampled upon by a few inches.
The organisers of the festival had brought in 15 elephants to take part in the ceremonial procession at Maha Ganapathy temple.
One of the elephants, Gouri Nandan, ran amok at 7.30 pm, flinging onlookers and parked vehicles aside. A team of spectators ran behind it trying to restrain the animal.
Officials, who were at the spot, shot a tranquiliser at the elephant helping spectators bring it to heel.
Two priests, who had mounted the elephant, stayed on top for most part of the nearly two-hour ordeal clinging on to each other.
Animal rights activist Rajeev N Kurup alleged that the elephant had gone berserk due to torture and over exertion.
“The elephants suffered serious wounds on their chest and legs due to the use of bull hook – a banned tool - by the mahouts. We have complained against festival organisers for flouting all regulations on parading elephants,” he said.
Activists have sought a ban on using elephants in religious ceremonies as they subject the animals to severe torture and exertion.
