Time-lapse of Philippine volcano lava fountain filmed from nearby city

Stunning time-lapse video showing the Philippines' Mount Mayan spewing a fountain of lava as seen from a nearby city.

In video filmed today (January 23) at 6pm local time in Legazpi City, the volcano can be seen spewing a fountain of lava and plumes of ash into the sky.

Writes the filmer: "It is characterized as a Strombolian type of eruption, where an ejection of lava (fountaining) and an ash plume kilometres high can be seen.

"The volcano has been erupting since yesterday, January 22, 2018, and had multiple episodes of eruptions today, January 23, 2018, eruption type ranging from phreatomagmatic to Vulcanian."

According to reports, more than 56,000 villagers have fled to evacuation centres.
