On Mana Island, New Zealand, a concrete gannet colony is attracting real gannets. The colony was established in 1997, and has begun to attract real gannets after the solar-powered sound system was tweaked. The system plays the sounds of gannets out to sea. In January 2018 three real gannets arrived. At the same time, the previous sole gannet, Nigel no mates, died suddenly. (See other videos of Nigel wooing his concrete mate. )

This video shows visitors to the island on a guided trip led by Friends of Mana Island on 27 January 2018, visiting the concrete gannet colony trying to spot the newcomers.

Friends of Mana Island, in association with the Department of Conservation, helps maintain the colony, weeding, painting, spraying fake guano around. (see other video showing maintenance work by FOMI).
