India’s Supreme Court refused to impose an immediate ban on controversial buffalo race held during Kambala festival on February 12.

Rejecting a prayer for an interim order by animal rights body People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the judges said they would take up the matter to a final hearing on March 12, after the season for the traditional sport concludes.

The Kambala festival race is held between November and March, in the coastal districts of Karnataka in South India.

A pair of buffaloes is tied to a plough and made to run in muddy tracks. While single pairs run against a timer, multiple pairs compete with each other in parallel tracks.

The farmers believe that the race entertains the Gods to bless them with a good harvest.

PETA has launched a campaign against Kambala saying it promotes cruelty to animals.
