The Great North Air ambulance was scrambled to Grasmere, in the Lake District today, after man was taken ill near Alcock Tarn high up on the fell. This was the second incident this week that the Air ambulance has attended in the Grasmere area which is popular with fell walkers.

The 63-year-old man from Durham was treated at the scene after the helicopter dropped two paramedics onto the fell side. The air ambulance was called in to assist the Langdale and Ambleside mountain rescue who were in attendance.

The man was subsequently taken to hospital in a land ambulance. His injuries were described as non life-threatening. The Helicopter then returned with it's pilot and two paramedics to its base at Langwathby near Penrith in the North of the Lake District.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) operates three helicopters, 365 days a year, across the North-East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. GNAAS crews respond to around 1,000 call outs each year and on board the aircraft are specialist trauma doctors and paramedics, who bring accident and emergency expertise to the scene. The helicopters are never more than a 15-minute flight from the nearest hospital.
